Anna's mind raced; it didn't seem possible she'd fall asleep.

Pabbie was preparing some sort of potion, a concoction of leaves and strange liquids from vials, crushed up and mixed and seeped like a tea.

The bed of moss she lay on was too small, and her legs hung over the edge. Her head lay on Kristoff's lap and he gently stroked her hair, smiling down at her.

"Here we are," Pabbie's gruff voice broke the silence and he shuffled to the bedside. Anna sat up and took the cup from his stone hands. It was warm and smelled of earth and mint.

"How long will it take to affect her?" Kristoff asked, looking warily at the cup.

"Not long, not long," the old troll's face cracked into a smile. "I cannot say what you will find when you enter that place. I do not even have a name for it. It is some deep and ancient place, where powers greater than Elsa or myself make their dwelling. What beasts haunt your sister, I do not know. Only, I know she is in grave danger." Anna drained the cup's contents as he spoke. "I do know this; your sister is not alone. Not as alone as she believes. She was born with power, and you were borne of the same blood. It unites you more than you know..."

His voice had slowly faded and Anna's vision clouded, filling her mind with shadow and silence.

Cold. Bitter and icy. Like teeth or claws piercing through her skin, into her spirit. Wherever she was, it was murky and bleak. Shadows twisted and contorted in the corners of her eyes, and voices murmured in her ears, too quiet to understand, but all-encompassing; a dull roar, suffocating her mind and thoughts.

She shivered and took a step. The ground beneath seemed to grab her, pull her into itself. Her head was foggy and her body ached with cold. She took a sharp breath and pulled her leg forward. A gust of wind pushed against her and knocked her to the ground.

Anna groaned and looked up at the murky sky. She rubbed her head and blinked the pain away. Standing up seemed impossible, as if icy hands were gripping her shoulders, pulling her back down.

For a moment, she couldn't remember what she was doing here. All she could understand was cold and hurt. That noise, the whispering, like daggers in her ears, made it impossible to think straight.

For a while, Anna didn't move. She tried to focus. "Why am I here? Why am I here? Where am I?"

For a while, the answers eluded her, but at some point- Anna didn't know how long she had lain there- she heard a whimper echo from somewhere up ahead.

"Please, please, I can't do this anymore. Just let me go."

Elsa.

Anna's heart lit up and she sat up, though not without effort. It took all the strength she had to pull herself to her feet, but she stood and looked around her, peering through the fog for a sign of her sister.

"Elsa!" She cried out, though her voice seemed muffled. "Elsa, where are you?"

The whispers evolved into shrieks and Anna put her hands over her ears, nearly crumpling to the ground again. She faltered, but stayed her ground. Her head throbbed in pain, but she ignored it.

"Elsa!"

"... Anna?" Elsa's hoarse voice called out from somewhere in the distance.

"Where are you? I'm coming." Anna gritted her teeth and pushed forward, through the driving wind and cold hands that grabbed at her from all directions.

"Anna, I—" Elsa screamed in pain, cutting off whatever she was going to say.

The sound was closer, somewhere to Anna's right. She turned and, though it felt like wading through mud, she ran as fast as she could to her sister's voice.

After a long and pain filled moment, the fog cleared enough for Anna to see her pale sister's body contorting on the ground.

A dark creature, more shadow than substance, was on top of her, it's claws pressing into Elsa's chest, forming paths of blood that spread and dripped down her neck and shoulders. Elsa's hand gripped the shadow's and she struggled to wrest herself tree.

Anna's voice was sharp as iron, "Let her go."

The demon looked up, it's pearl eyes piercing into Anna's. It wheezed in something like a laugh and in a guttural voice, it spoke. "She is mine. I am she. She will not be free of me; she is me."

Without thinking, Anna leapt onto the shadow.

Her skin burned with cold and the thing sunk teeth and claws into Anna, leaving Elsa where she lay, bleeding on the ground.

Anna screamed and wailed on the dark figure, but her hands didn't seem to touch the beast.

She was helpless as the monster raked its claws into her skin, leaving her bleeding and weak. Her eyes blurred and once more pain was all she knew.

"Born with power... borne of the same blood."

Her eyes caught a glimpse of her sister beside her, struggling to move.

This sister she never got to know, never got to laugh with, or cry with, or share her life with. A sister stolen from her by this demon, this fear, that had captured and controlled Elsa all these years. A sister she had abandoned once already. She wasn't going to let that happen again.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, shutting out the pain and noise.

In her mind, she saw a candle light, small and soft and flickering. She latched onto its warmth and felt its fire course through her veins, melting the icy claws which gripped her.

She opened her eyes and looked into the demon's white orbs. It looked back and shrieked, pulling away. Her body felt like it was on fire, and her heartbeat hammered in her ears.

Shaking, she stepped towards the monster. It cowered and hissed. Not knowing what she was doing, Anna lifted her hand and screamed, and to her shock, ribbons of blue and white fire shot from somewhere deep within her, wrapping around the beast. It twisted and groaned, steam rising from where the fire touched it. It withered, shrinking, trying to claw its way out of the fire. Anna kept her hand raised, watching bewildered as the shadowy demon evaporated before her eyes.

In an instant, it was silent. Anna stood motionless, her breathing heavy. Elsa moaned in pain, shaking Anna from her daze.

She knelt beside her bleeding sister and pulled her limp body into her arms. Silent tears ran down her face as she cradled her sister, wishing all the pain away, all the hurt, all the loneliness. As though if she held tight enough, it might cause the years of isolation to disappear in place of love.

"I love you, Elsa. I love you so much," she muttered into her hair.

Elsa held onto her with what little strength she had, and Anna could feel her shaking in silent sobs.

"I'm here." Anna whispered. "I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere."
