Darcy's horse casts a shoe while riding to Pemberley which causes him to miss encountering Elizabeth Bennet who is touring the estate. Thus he is unable to show her his change in behaviour, fails to learn of her improved opinion of him, fails to meet the Gardiners, and fails to learn what happens to Lydia. Mrs. Bennet vows never to speak to Elizabeth again after her refusal of Mr. Collins offer of marriage. Unfortunately for her, that vow is achieved in a most unexpected manner with unexpected results.

This is not about Elizabeth and Darcy, it is about Colonel Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth. It is complicated and bittersweet; there is tragedy and maybe a little hope and love. Not for everyone. Rated M.

Elizabeth is slightly more perspicuous and thoughtful, and does not fall for Wickham's story, leading to an earlier resolution to a attachment to Darcy. Mrs. Gardiner also plays an expanded role.
