Author has written 18 stories for Teen Titans, Young Justice, and DC Superheroes. Here is a little background on the main character Jake Cross from Shattered Persona. As the story progresses more will be filled in. Name: Jake Nathaniel Cross (Wilson) DOB: December 13 Resides: Gotham City, New Jersey Family: Slade “Deathstroke” Wilson (father); Adeline Kane Wilson (mother); Rose “Ravager” Wilson (younger sister); Grant Joseph "Jericho" Worth (younger half-brother); Wade "Deadpool" Wilson (paternal uncle); Lian Adeline Nguyen (genetic clone/daughter); Aliyah Cross (possible future daughter) Occupation: CEO and Owner of Cross Enterprise; Thief; Current Heir of the Demon (League of Assassins) Alter Ego: Red X (formerly); Black Spider History: Early Years Born Jake Nathaniel Wilson, Jake and his sister, Rose, was brought up in a wealthy, yet strict, household with both of their parents serving in the army at one point of time or another. Unlike Rose, Jake took a less serious side to life, despite all the training he had received. His father, who was secretly an assassin, took a keen interest in Jake’s progression, but when Jake proved that he would not take a life, turned his attentions towards Rose. When Jake was ten, he and Rose were kidnapped by a man named Wade Wilson, stated that their father owed them for a job. Jake learned that his kidnapper was actually his father’s brother, thus making him Jake’s uncle. While Jake and Rose attempted to fight for their freedom, neither were able to get an upper-hand on the man, and Rose ends up losing her left eye in a bout. Slade, now revealed to his family as the assassin as Deathstroke, came to the rescue of his children and chased his brother away. While Jake stayed with Rose in the hospital as she recovered, he learned of his parents’ divorce. Years later, Jake puts his abilities to use and becomes a small-time thief. He, along with his sister, continued to live with their mother who had custody of the two. Jake realized that Rose held some resentment towards Adeline and attempted to quell her anger by allowing her to come with him on his “missions”. During one of their small-time robberies, Rose beats a kid her age near-death, forcing Jake to remove her from her victim and forget about the money they had stolen. Weeks later, Slade returns, sporting an eye-patch over his right eye, and took a willing Rose as his apprentice while Jake refused his offer. Red X & Teen Titans Adeline is later killed by David Cain, leaving Jake her parents’ fortune. Jake leaves his mother’s manor and ends in Jump City to give the news to his father. He doesn’t find Slade right away, being sidetracked by a “challenge”; breaking into Titan’s Tower. However, the Titans are nowhere insight and he is left with breaking in with little to no trouble. It is then that he would find the Red X costume as well as a briefcase that held Robin’s identity. Knowing that Slade would eventually find Red X if Red X proved worthy enough, Jake began committing a series of robberies, gaining the attention of his father and the Teen Titans. Jake finally met his father as Red X, giving him the news that Adeline has passed. Surprised that Slade actually showed remorse, Jake revealed himself to his father. Slade, now wearing a mask, also revealed to Jake what had happened whilst Jake was visiting Rose in the hospital, stating that Adeline felt “An eye for an eye was justifying,” and that she allowed him to live to “See the divorce papers coming.” Slade then tells Jake that Rose has been inducted into the League of Assassins and trained under Lady Shiva. Knowing that he would be able to speak to Rose if he gained a bigger audience, Red X continued to execute a series of robberies throughout Jump City. He constantly ran into the Teen Titans, building a one-sided feud with Dick Grayson, better known as Robin. Jake would continually pick and jibe at Dick for his shortcomings when it came to stopping him. He would also flirt with Koriand’r (Starfire) to further irritate Dick. It was during a run-in with Professor Chang that Jake would save Dick, claiming that the Boy Wonder “owed him one,” before he escaped the Titans once more. Jake was soon approached by Madame Rouge, who attempted to rob from him. After he apparently defeated her, she would invite him to the Brother of Evil to join them. Realizing that they would be just another step to get closer to his younger sister he accepts. Jake would meet Jade Nguyen, alias Cheshire. The two do not have a friendly relationship and are often put on separate missions for the obvious reason that Jake does not like to kill. In fact, Jake has a strong dislike for most of his new teammates, especially Adonis who believed that he was superior to Jake with or without his suit. While a member of the Brother of Evil, Jake is pitted against Roy Harper during a mission in Steel City. This would be the first of many times that the two fight. During a random robbery minutes outside of Jump City, Jake hears that Ding Dong Daddy stole Dick’s most-prized possession. Realizing that he was talking about Dick’s suitcase containing information about Dick’s past, Jake joins the race. His intentions were to sale the secrets to the League of Assassins in hopes of meeting his sister. However, once Dick saved him from a would-be fatal incident, he repays him by destroying most of the competition. The Brain, leader of the Brotherhood of Evil, would grow angry with Jake, causing Red X to subsequently leave the group. The League of Assassins A year later, Jake would go to Professor Chang for a supply of Xenothium for his suit. He would run into an irate Mr. Freeze, who almost defeats Jake. The following day, Jake would learn that his sister, Rose, was killed in a fire. Deeply depressed about the lost of his “last family member”, Jake changed his last name to Cross as a sign that Red X had become who he was and Jake was the alter ego. Jake would go to Gotham to view his sister’s body only to learn that the Teen Titans were in the exact building Rose was in before it collapsed. More importantly, Robin had been fighting a “highly skilled assassin” before the building collapsed. Enraged, Jake sets off to find Dick who he believes could have saved his sister from the building. After robbing Wayne Enterprises repeatedly in Jump City, Jake finally has his chance to fight the Teen Titans. Albeit having more team members, Jake was able to subdue them all in a city-wide chase filled with traps for specific members. Once they were all out of the way, he would engage Dick in a fight on top of Wayne Enterprises building. He eventually defeats Dick, yet spares his life. Jake states that he and Dick are each other’s “other half” and needed one another to survive. Although Dick disagrees, Jake’s words about how the Teen Titans destroyed the city chasing after him as well as the death of his sister in Gotham affect Dick, making Dick believe that Jake was right. He was a threat. Jake would leave Jump City, moving to Gotham City as Jake Cross to be closer to Rose’s grave. There he is contacted by Talia al Ghul and the League of Assassins. Still enraged over Rose’s death, Jake accepts her offer with his first mission was to team up with Cheshire and free Slade and Sportsmaster from Blackgate Prison. Despite hating his teammate and goal, Jake does so and is brought into the league by Ra’s request. Due to his age and school, Jake is given a mission at Gotham Academy to spy on and get closer to Jade’s sister, Artemis Crock. While on this mission, Jake learns that Dick also attends this school. Jake continues his mission and eventually becomes good friends with her and her friends. This would backfire as Dick, after learning who Jake was, invites Jake and Artemis over to Wayne Manor for a “double-date” with himself and Barbara, a friend of Artemis. Begrudgingly, Jake goes to the home of his biggest foe with Cheshire watching outside. During the dinner, Jake learns that Roy Harper, now known as Red Arrow, was present and engages Cheshire in battle. When Dick accuses of Jake of foul play, Jake tells Dick that he had nothing plan (despite planning on taking information from the Bat-computer later) and states that Dick is nothing more than an idea. Afterwards Jake attempts to take Artemis home but is almost hit by an arrow from Roy at the doorway. Stating that Dick wanted to assassinate him using “second-rate” heroes, Jake takes Artemis home before reuniting with Jade, who was previously fighting with Red Arrow and the new Aqualad. Jake continues the mission and has now become Artemis’s boyfriend, which angers Jade. Yet, Jake was unsuccessful at stopping Artemis from joining the Young Justice League. And during a mission to kill Dr. Serling Roquette and acquire the Fog, Jake was pitted against Artemis where he continually dodged her while calling her “sweetie” and “cutie”. While their mission was only half-way completed, Ra’s was happy to at least have the mission as well as having Jake so close to Artemis. Jake would then search out the former Titan Raven for help. He wanted her to remove his feelings for Artemis as she had become more than a mission to him. He runs into Raven while she is at a smaller hideout with friends Starfire and Jinx. Raven initially denies his request, and after a stand-off between Jake and her two friends, sends Jake into Nevermore. Raven then sends Jake back to reality after using her magic to make a video of Jake and the three girls fighting to trick the League of Assassins into thinking that she and the thief hated one another. Soon afterwards Jake is pitted against the remained of the HIVE Five (Gizmo, Mammoth, See-more, Billy Numerous, and Kyd Wykkyd). He fights them without his Red X suit, wearing a suit that strongly resembles his father’s and Rose’s. He was able to defeat three of the five (See-More, Kyd Wykkyd, and Mammoth) before the al Ghul sisters intervene and kill Billy Numerous. Later as Red X, Jake tracks down Gizmo and destroys the hideout the tech genius was using. This would leave his right arm injured for several weeks, giving it very little time to heal. After dealing with Pink X on Christmas Eve, Red X and Cheshire are called on a mission to Santa Prisca. Once there the pair ran into Robin which leads them to assume that the other members of the Team are nearby. Red X and Robin both believe that their respective missions are setups before they are ambushed by Queen Bee and three brainwashed heroes (Red Arrow, Red Tornado, and Black Canary). Red X and Robin battle Black Canary, resulting in Jake’s temporary deafness, and retreat before more damage could be done. They regroup with the remainder of the Team (Aqualad, Miss Martian, Artemis, and Superboy), Cheshire, and then eventually Deathstroke and Sportsmaster who had an unconscious Kid Flash. Deathstroke comes up with a plan that would free those brainwashed by Queen Bee’s Starro-tech and splits the team into two; Sportsmaster’s team going to release Bane while Deathstroke’s went after Queen Bee. Slade purposely separates Jake and Jade despite their obvious dynamics and puts Jake on his team with Artemis, Miss Martian, Robin, and Aqualad. Slade leads his group to retrieve what will be used to create Cure-tech, having M’gann, Dick, and Jake infiltrate Queen Bee’s home in Bialya. Here, Jake sees M’gann in her normal form and, after seeing her discomfort, jokes that he had seen Slade’s face and that that was “hideous”. The two would separate so Jake could steal some of Queen Bee’s Xenothium before meeting back up and fleeing Bialya with the others. After regrouping with Sportmaster’s team in Happy Harbor, the group begins to “acquire” things for Dr. Serling Roquette to create the cure for Queen Bee’s Starro-tech, Cure-tech. The group then successfully gains access to the Watchtower where they must battle the brainwashed heroes and criminals that are under Queen Bee’s command. Here Jake battles Icicle Jr., his mentor Nyssa (who further injures his right arm), Wildcat (with Cheshire), Batman and Hal Jordan, and finally comes to Artemis’s rescue in the missile launch room. Successfully saving Artemis from being sucked out into space, Red X destroys the final missile before blacking out. Once he came to, he was thanked by Aqualad, Miss Martian, and Robin and then by Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Both groups offered him a spot on the Team, which he refuses. During the early months of the following year, Jake learns that Artemis has grown some romantic feelings with Kid Flash. Nyssa and Talia attempt to exploit this during one of their sparring sessions, but Jake insists that he has no feelings for Artemis and that she is “just a mission” to him. Jake begins to seek out Veronica Sinclair (Roulette) to find out information on Vandal Savage. Without his Red X suit, he breaks into her office in Gotham where he finds Lady Shiva instead. Intrigued by the new Heir of the Demon, Shiva takes Jake in as her final apprentice. Armed with a technique that even Talia, a former student of Shiva’s, did not learn, Jake returns to Gotham to set up his final plan which involves Raven and Gemini. Nearing the end of Jake’s junior year of high school, Talia and Nyssa give Jake and Jade a mission to steal technology from Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze). They were stopped by the Young Justice where Jake engages the Team (Superboy, Kid Flash, and Artemis) while Cheshire acquires a machine from Mr. Freeze. After Red X defeats Kid Flash and Superboy and then breaking Artemis’s bow, Cheshire returns and reveals that the mission is a bust. Artemis would pull out her collapsible crossbow and fire at Jake, prompting Jade to shout: “Jake, look out!” before taking the arrow for him. Jake would then teleport himself and Artemis away where the two would fight, Jake being the victor. He would leave Artemis battered and crying where Wally would later find her. The following day at school, she confronts Jake on the roof of their school where he tells her that he was “never in love” with her and that she “was only another mission” due to the fact that he spotted one of Nyssa’s spies. When a heartbroken Artemis leaves, he attacks the spy to vent his frustrations. Later that night, Jake would meet with Gemini, Raven, and Kaldur to plan out Jake’s “greatest plan”. The four would carry out the plan after school ends, starting with Jake robbing a jewelry store in Gotham, causing an alert to go to the Team. Much like his final bout with the Teen Titans, Jake cunningly picks off the Team one by one (Red Arrow included) before escaping to a nearby Wayne Enterprises building. There is where Artemis would catch up to her ex-boyfriend, the two having a small confrontation before Conner intervenes. Robin also comes and detains Artemis while he, Kid Flash, and Zatanna head after Red X. The chase would soon end at the construction site of the embassy Rose died at. Jake forced Artemis to either allow him to shoot Wally or she shoots Jake with an arrow. The decision came when Kaldur knocks Jake off of the roof with a blade of water through the thief’s chest, sending him falling to his apparent death. After Death Gemini would replace Jake’s body after he was announced dead in the field while Raven would take Jake to his home in New York. Despite warnings, Jake immediately leaves his home for Jump City to leave the Ring of Azar for Raven. However, due to his injuries, Jake passes out in his hideout in Jump, where he would remain for days until Raven finds him and returns him to New York. Waking up in his former home again, Jake reunites with Raven, Kaldur, and Gemini to discuss their plan only to be sent into the future. There he saw, not only a revived and older Rose, but his daughter Aliyah (alias Phoenix) and a new villain known as Ivan. After the future Jake Cross informs Jake of the members of the Light and other threats, Jake is returned back to his present time with a letter from "the Future Mrs. Cross." The letter not only gave him the blueprints to creating Ben (Jake's nano-technological symbiotic suit), but it also gave him the time and place to find Ra's al Ghul and Lady Shiva to further his training. It is know that during his training with Ra's, Jake would have to fight his inner demons which reveals to him the side-effects of Raven's spell. Jake would have to battle his emotions and unite them to eventually go up against the person who he saw as a reflection of himself, Batman. After defeating the mental version of the Dark Knight, Jake is able to free himself of the hold created by the fear toxin he had been meditating in for six hours. Sometimes afterwards Jake completed his Black Spider suit (and eventually the Scarlet Spider suit). He tested his abilities against Silver Monkey and his Monkey Fist Cult, defeating ten of Silver Monkey's top warriors and then Silver Monkey himself. Ra's would later test Jake's new abilities by sending Nyssa's and Talia's top students after the Black Spider, forgoing to tell them that it was indeed Jake in disguise, which led to Jake's meeting of Sophie. Jake would meet up with Shiva sometime before his return, learning more from the master martial artist. The woman would teach Jake only hand-to-hand combat as well as the ability to read body language, a trait he now uses to disguise his own thoughts or intentions. Lady Shiva also taught Jake how to endure more pain, another ability which allows the Spider to take on multiple opponents without losing his will to continue. Black Spider Jake would return back to Gotham after a three-year hiatus. He returns in time to follow Cheshire to Dick's graduation, the woman there to assassinate the one she blames for Jake's "death". While Jade's plans are ultimately ruined by a call from Talia, Jake would reunite with his ex later at her apartment, the two spending the night together. The duo would get a mission to free Jake's father and uncle from Arkham Asylum days later, a mission Jake used to "show-off" his new skills and suit to Jade. While their teamwork had done nothing but grow, the trust between the two had lowered with Jake constantly wondering who "touched" Jade. When Talia comes to Jake's apartment to question the Heir, Jake revealed that he had also reestablished his maternal grandparents' company, renaming it Cross Enterprise. It is also hinted that Talia harbors a small crush on the young man despite not fully trusting him. It would not be long that Jake and Jade had a mission together, however, and they were sent to Gotham to find a girl known as Mia Darden and kill her. Jake would initially refuse the mission before agreeing to it. He even goes out to "assess" the new Speedy, engaging her, Robin (Jason Todd), and Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark) while the trio were pursuing Mad Mod. The one-sided fight ended with the Black Spider disappointed at the new Robin and leaving. This was after catching an arrow from Speedy which immediately cemented his skills to the girl. Jake would later spy on Artemis (who was visiting her mother) the next day, overhearing the archer admit that she still misses her ex. Jake's relationship with Jade would worsen when Gemini reveals that there was a leak within The Light. He finds her within Gotham City and asks her about it. After disbelieving her, Jake resumes "searching" for the leak. Jake would soon be invited to a dinner party hosted by Bruce Wayne. The young man arrives with the intentions of acquiring a new ally to his cause, only for the two to get into a verbal spar. Jake makes it clear to Bruce that he cared for Artemis, far more than he cared about the world. He points out to Bruce that he "stopped being a thief when it became too much for [Artemis]" while Batman "...couldn’t do the same for Talia and [Bruce] know it.” The current Heir of the Demon would leave the party and end up spying on Artemis again when Deathstroke (who was hired by the Brain) attacks him. After going toe-to-toe with his father, Jake finally gets Deathstroke to pause in his attack by revealing who he was. Taking advantage of Slade's shock, Jake blinds his father with a web and scatters small explosives in the alley before leaving for Jade's apartment. Jake and Jade would soon go after Mia, stalking her throughout the early hours of the day. Jake also notes that Red X (Jason Todd), was following them, telling Jade that he knew this because his "spider senses are tingling." While Jade goes after Red X, the Black Spider follows Mia to a nearby church where he confronts her. However, instead of engaging her in battle, he tests her character by giving her the location of the man who used to pimp her out. Jake gives Mia the option of killing the man (which would result in Jake killing her) or letting the man go for her life. He leaves Mia and eventually goes to his office. Standing on the roof of Cross Enterprise, Jake is joined by Talia. During their conversation, Talia questions Jake's about the "mark" on his back. After threatening to kill her if she revealed the seal to anyone, Jake receives a call from Jade who has found Red X and Speedy. Jake would head for Cheshire's location, stopping to make sure that Mia did not kill her former "employer". However, before Jake could join his partner, he is stopped by Lieutenant Marvel. The Spider battles the magically enhanced teen, getting Marvel to destroy Poison Ivy's flower shop in the process before tricking Marvel into saying "Captain Marvel" again, thus reverting the faux god back into a handicapped teen. The Black Spider would gag the boy's mouth to prevent him from changing back and allowing Poison Ivy put Marvel "in time-out". Afterwards, Jake reunites with Jade where she reveals that she has killed Red X. Knowing how Dick and Batman would react, Jake sends Jade out of Gotham until things have settled down. He would also find and kidnap Artemis and explain to her how he survived his presumed death in exchange for her cooperation to his goals. Jason's death would cause more strife between Dick and Bruce, forcing the former to dawn a new persona, Nightwing. At the same time, it is revealed to Jake that Vandal Savage has hired Deathstroke to find and remove the leak within the Light. Said leak was revealed to be Jade who was giving Roy information to tell the Team in order for them to investigate Cadmus without interference. After a call from Artemis warning Jake of Dick's intentions of possibly murdering Cheshire, Jake leaves for Star City to rescue Jade. During his pursuit of Cheshire, he runs into the private owned militia known as TYGER and recognizes that they are armed with weapons manufactured through Cross Enterprises. Jake would also run into his father who had recorded Jade's nightly affair with Roy, enraging Jake greatly. This rage would be taking out on Cyborg, who was searching for Jade as well. In the battle against Cyborg, Jake would cut Cyborg's right hand off and knock the former Titan into the room of Lonnie Machin. It is Jake's words to Lonnie that would later encourage the boy to become Anarky. Jake would soon make it seem that Jade was investigating Cadmus, keeping her from being killed by the League of Assassins. Jake's relationship with Jade would decline afterwards, the two doing more solo missions than as a pair. Despite their outwardly distrust of each other, Jake would catch Jade before her mission for Luthor and bug her to be able to trace her wherever she went. He would soon find out about Lian and Jade's attempts to keep Lian a secret from him through his father, Slade. Slade would promise Jake more information on Lian if Jake did a favor for Deathstroke. This would make Jake battle against the YJL members Batgirl, Bumblebee, Guardian, and Lagoon Boy. During the fight Jake learns that Batgirl (who unbeknownst to him is former classmate Barbara Gordon) knows his secret identity. Because she knew who he was, he opts to save her after his father shoots her in the back, ultimately saving her. The Black Spider would then respond to Cheshire's distress call in Russia, defeating several armed soldiers before freeing her, Red Arrow, and Killer Frost. He would then return back to the United States with Cheshire in time to meet up with Raven and Gemini who were returning from Oa with news of the "black ring of death". |
