![]() Author has written 2 stories for Code Lyoko. Reviews: On the flipside, if you're reviewing one of my works, I'd love it if you'd please do the same for me as I try to do when I review. I want you to ask questions and give me your opinion, and I always take constructive criticism. I love love love getting long reviews too, so don't be shy! My Work: My OCs: I love Code Lyoko. But, it is a kid's show first and foremost, and it is also from the early 2000s. It is also a bit dated, and it struggles with diversity. We have Jeremie, the bookish nerd in love with Aelita, the pink haired, pink dressed princess. We have Odd, the flamboyant feline who many fans interpret as LGBT but who the show portrays exclusively as very very straight. There's Ulrich and William, the broody bad boys. There's Yumi, the Japanese girl who practices martial arts, loves black and hates pink. We also have beloved recurring characters like Sissi, Jim and Franz Hopper. Do I love this cast? Absolutely. Do I still think it's important to be willing to be critical of my favorite cartoon and admit that it could be better? Yeah, kinda. While the show is greatly respectful of Yumi's Japanese heritage when we see her at home with her family, she is the one and only non-white major character, and still has the exact same skin tone as everyone else. Tamiya is the only minor black character that actually shows up fairly frequently, while Sam is in two episodes and also is a literal criminal who makes Odd's life harder in both episodes. There's also a few random students who rarely show up in the background and never talk. Further, Aelita and Sissi are the only girls in the main ensemble other than Yumi, and they both are very very feminine and dress in all pink. Jim is low key racist toward Yumi. Aside from Jim, whose weight is played for laughs, everyone has the exact same body type; no matter how much they make fun of Odd and Jeremie, when they're shown shirtless at the pool or shower, they have the same body as Ulrich and William. Yes, this is France, a primarily homogenous country, but people of all kinds live in France in 2008. So, without changing the original characters from how they are written, I chose to introduce characters of other identities in the form of OCs. We have Varric, who is extra tall and buff and possibly gay or bi. We have Tomas, who is thin, not thin-muscular like Odd and Jeremie, and is definitely gay. We have Kimi, who is Chinese-Indonesian and darker-skinned, plus-sized while not being made fun of, and bisexual. We have Ashanti, who is black and asexual. Some of these characters interact with Lyoko because they simply absolutely must have a reason to be involved in the plot, as there is no point in introducing such characters who stay in the background. I take extra care to allow them to interact with the other characters and participate in the plot, since they are special to me and I want to develop them, but I do so in equal amounts to the existing cast, so that they can develop as characters without the story revolving around them. At the end of the day, Code Lyoko is Aelita's story and she is the focus more than anyone else. I also make sure that everyone on Lyoko has the same number of powers, while for plot reasons I need those who go to Lyoko to be on the same level as those who've been fighting on Lyoko for the last few years, so I use the "upgrade" mechanic and extensive training scenes to assist with getting the newcomers to parity without them being overpowered Mary Sues and Gary Stus. While we're on the topic of making changes, this story introduces mature, adult themes, and by that I don't mean overtly sexual or suggestive themes as "mature" and "adult" often suggest, but I mean I try to portray real world issues intelligently and realistically. This isn't a show on Cartoon Network anymore. Even the original show and Evolution had the characters swearing in the show's home France, as swearing is not as "bad" there, and the Chronicles book showed quite a few things that would never have flown on Cartoon Network. So I use a synthesis of what is already officially out there regarding Code Lyoko. These kids are 16-19 over the course of this story, so yes, there will be occasional references to alcohol or sex, and yes, there will be occasional profanity, because in the real world high school kids are exposed to those things routinely. These things are far from uncommon for fanfic, but again, I hope to portray it in a more intelligent, respectable manner, rather than stuffing the story with it in a way that feels juvenile.
