Well...first of all, when I start to beta, I'll try to find the good parts of the plot. That way, we can narrow it down to the parts that can stand a little correcting. I'll give a little bit of advice there, add a story idea here, and give you some encouragement, but most of all, I'm going to just try to let you see your own faults. You yourself are the worst critique after all. I'll just point out the spots you can work on, and leave you to figure it out.

I pretty much look out for spelling/grammar, and the writing style. If there's practically no detail at all, I'll put in a word to tell you to describe. If the detail is too flowery and takes up half the chapter, I'll tell you to simplify it. And if the story line is moving too fast, too slowly, is too fluffy, etc, I'll inform you right away.

I'm sometimes a bit careless. I see a part that needs fixing, promise myself I'll go back to it, and end up forgett. I also try to mind the tiny details, though, but my untrained eyes will probably miss something.

I wouldn't say I prefer some stories over others, but I have to say, complicated stories just don't do well for me. Keep it short, keep it simple, but don't make it so thin that I end up falling through it. That's not to say I hate complicated stories. It's just that with too many plot lines, too many characters, and too many details to fix, it's hard for me to beta.

I dislike stories with yaoi/yuri, smut, and graphic violence. If a sensual scene is implied and not discussed with great detail, I'll be fine. Yaoi/yuri makes me kind of queasy, so please, none of the same sex romance. Graphic violence, enough said.
