Kakashi joined ANBU at age 17. But this is fanfiction and it could have been intentional. In which case, it only further accentuated the incomprehensible damage war could to do to childhood. There was enough awkwardness in the characters to fit the realistic image of their age groups. Enjoyed this.

"But…you don't need to sleep," Iruka protested. "That's what everyone says."

"Of course," Kakashi sighed. "And I don't need to breathe either."

"For real?" Iruka's eyes widened in an awed expression.

"No."

"...Oh."

That was a beautiful story. Heartfelt and true to both Iruka and Kakashi's characters, respectively.

In fact, I'm surprised at how much depth you added to Iruka's character. Giving him a "suspicious" father and Naruto-style tenaciousness before his parents even died adds a lot to who he becomes (in canon) later on.

And Kakashi *sigh* his life really sucked, huh? There is nothing quite as appalling (or realistic) as kids caught in war, and the Narutoverse paints one hell of an awful, militiristic society. You managed to capture that trauma perfectly without melodrama, which is an incredible accomplishment for a prompted fanfic!

It is a pleasure to read something so well written and well researched on this site. Now I think I have to check out your other stories!
