I love the touch of just a little alliteration here: "reconnaissance to a kind of remembering" and the outright here: "allegedly arbitrary assignment." It gives a wonderful flow and cadence. This was pure magic, incredibly prosaic, intelligently written, and absolutely poetic. There are too many incredible lines to quote here. Lines that took my breath away with their genius. Perfection. This is beautiful. I think that stories without dialogue are sometimes the hardest to write because you have to captivate the readers' interest with descriptions and details and hold it and you have managed to do exactly that. I love your language, the words you use and how you show their entire relationship through what they've been through together, how they've been there for each other. I especially love the part about 'I love you' in a thousand variations; while I cannot quite pinpoint the reason, it resonated within me. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
