First Hetalia fanfict I ever read: 37 Things to do in an Elevator by LittleBlueNayru How I found out about Hetalia Not too long ago, I was reading The Four Swords: Reiteration by TiggerPup91, and I was like "Wow. This is a good story!" cuz ya know, I'm a Legend of Zelda fan. I read the Four Swords manga and loved it, so when I discovered Fanfiction.net, I thought I would look for fanficts on it. Since this author was really good, I thought that she/he/it would have some interesting stories in her favorites. That was when I saw 37 Things to do in an Elevator by LittleBlueNayru. I looked at what the story was based on. I had no idea what what "Hetalia" meant, but I did understand "Axis Powers". In my mind I was thinking, Axis Powers? As in WW2? You see, I am a nerd and even though history was boring sometimes, it was still interesting. Plus, I was always curious when things mentioned what I learned in school. I tried to read it...And I had no idea what was going on. You want to know how bad it was? ...I thought Russia was a girl XD. I didn't do anything immediately, but eventually, I decided to look up Hetalia on Wikipedia. I did...I didn't understand it. I couldn't really grasp the concept of them actually being the countries. Then, I read episode summaries and I was even more confused. I was like, "Wait...So are they actually fighting in war with their governments and stuff, or is this like some sort of paraell universe thing where there are people named after countries and it's just like some sort of neighborhood bullying thing.?" You know like a parody of the war. Since it was so confusing, I thought it was just some weird thingy and dropped it. After a little more time with reading my Four Swords fanfict, I got curious again. I tried Wikipedia again...I still didn't get it. I at least wanted to know what the people in LittleBlueNayru's fanfict looked like. The pictures weren't the best on Wikipedia. How could you even tell them apart?, I thought as I looked at a picture of the Allies. Now, of course, when I go back now I could easily tell who was who. Heck, I can name all of the chibis on the world picture shown during the marukaite chikyuu. But you need to understand that I had no idea what Hetalia even meant, and I was just getting into anime(I am refering to my first anime Inuyasha), so of course I would be confused. So, being a naturally curious and history-nerdy person, I decided to look it up on Youtube. It was a good idea...except for the fact that I chose the wrong video. So, I barely got a few minutes into what was not a Hetalia episode but a Hetalia blooper clip. One, I was confused. Two, the F-word was spoken. At this point in my life, I was just going into High School and I was just being introduced to the concept of bad words being spoken on a dailey basis. I was still sensitive about that stuff. So, during the blooper video, after the F-word was spoken( I think it was when Canada was trying to beat up America, though that could have been the second time. I had a rule: The first bad word, I ignore it and hope that it won't happen again. On the second one, I would stop watching it.), I immediately stopped the video and quitted my research on Hetalia. After that, two things happened: 1. I started watching anime for the first time.Inuyasha, to be exact. I got used to the concept of blood, bad language, and er...other mild stuff. I completely fell in love with the anime and would watch it on my ipod whenever I had free time. I'll even share I secret. This happened when I was still in school, of course, so that means that I even staid up late to watch an epsiode or two. My mom wouldn't have approved. It never really messed me up in the morning so I was cool. 2. I started to get used to bad words becuase I was in high school. I would constantly hear people saying the F-words and S-word and other things. It would still take some time before I grew indifferent to those words( That's where I'm at now). Of course, even now, I would still be annoyed if someone said them in practically every conversation(I only accept the use of bad words when someone is in a situation and they just need to let out stress in a word or if one is really really mad. It's better than violence after all. Whenever people just use it in conversations calmly, I think its pathetic. It sounds like they are just trying to be cool. Plus, it is kind of dirty and shows a bad attitude. Romano's the only exception. He is always angry xD.), but I wouldn't be horrified. In my opinion: They are just words. It is much better than violence. The only difference between these words and other words that we use casually can only be one to two letters. I started the path of the otaku. After this point, I stared at Hetalia in a new light. I wanted to try it again. However, at this point, I was still slightly sensitive at bad words(I didn't hear the first bad word in Inuyasha till, surprisely, much later. I think that one of the first times was when Inuyasha was talking to his brother(XD), whose name I know how to say, but not type...Plus I'm too lazy to look him up:P.) How did I solve this problem? I read fanfictions instead of watching the actual anime. You see, I had this weird thing about me. It was easier for me to read bad words than actually hear them. It still shocked me a little bit, but not as much. It was actually a good idea for me to do that. Why? I could picture the characters loosely off of their anime appearance, but I still had my own interpretation of them.(A fun fact: I read Romano way before I saw him on the anime, so when I watched him for the first time, I was surprised at how deep his voice was. I "pictured" Romano's voice to be lighter than that...I was always bad at imagining voices). I was sucked in. The fanficts were fun to read. It was like a fun, crazy world where anything can happen, and I was glad to apart of it. It felt like a carefree and humorous spice to my life of a nerd. After quite a long time, (I was too captivated by the fanficts) I tried out the anime...I loved it! The baddest words were bleeped out and the few words that weren't, I could just brush off. I guess you could say that I grew up somewhat, but I was still able to love my animated stuff. I liked things like Pokemon and stuff. Anime seemd like a step up. As in, it was still fun animations, but more adult- like. And thus, my Hetalia craze began. |
