Beth stepped closer to wrap her arms around him in a hug that warmed him down to his toes, even with her little belly poking at him. This girl had no idea the effect she had on other people - on him - or the effect she would have on their baby. She was going to be a great mother - a protective mother - a lioness. Daryl was after her to rest more; would gently push her onto the couch, refused to let her hunt or haul or dig. Time ate Beth up - every little bit of her brain - any piece of it that she used to be able to quiet with movement or exhaustion. All she had were dragging days, the long hours crawling past as she waited - bracing herself for the worst. Always the worst.

Maggie always cried, silently, absently, as though she was not aware of it - and a better guy would've stopped. A better guy would never have started, but Daryl had never claimed to be one of those.
