Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ignited my imagination the way few works have. Part of that was timing. When the game was released, we'd been at war in Iraq for several years, yet we carried on back home like nothing was happening. The war was something on TV. Most of us had no idea what was really going on over there, until MW brought it into our living rooms. I'd long been intrigued by the writings of foreign policy analysts and with stories from the Intelligence community, now I was fascinated with finding out just who these special operations groups were, and what made these people tick.

When it looked like a resolution to MW2's cliffhanger was in legal limbo, I thought that if I wanted one, I might have to make it myself.

Thanatos Denied was a simple experiment that I figured would last a few months. I’d never written a story before, and wanted to see if I could.

It wound up taking a good deal longer than that.

The journey to its completion was a pretty interesting ride. I met people that I otherwise never would have, wrote about things I had zero experience with (and some that I do), and researched stuff I never imagined that I would. It even sent me across the pond, to a little town known for both its hard cider and hard men.

Why did I even bother with all this? After all, I can't sell it.

Truth is, without my beta, Sassy Satsuma, it never would've happened. I needed someone to make sure my British characters stayed British, and she was (and is) one of my favorite fanfic authors. I got way more than I bargained for! She helped me to develop as a writer, I think without either of us realizing it at the time.

She's a part of a crazy awesome fandom sisterhood that includes Lisbet Adair and Smashinterrupted. I can't properly express what their support has meant to me over the years, and how lucky I am to to have them. The fact that we're still writing and people are still reading says a lot of about the Modern Warfare characters, and is quite a tip of the hat to their creators!
