Five years. That's all it takes to build a life and then destroy it.

She stills and slows her breath, matches it to the slow foaming water. One step and then another and another, until she is ankle-deep in the water, further and further out until the sea is pulling at her waist, dragging her out, dragging her away. She gives in to the pull and goes under, swims underneath the surface with eyes wide open.

Regina stares at her for a moment, thinks about complacency and how the world falls apart when everything is finally going right, but Emma is looking at her with that smile, the one that reaches all the way to her eyes, and Regina is selfish enough to want to keep her here for at least a little longer.

Nathan Ford figured out a long time ago that there was no use in trying to outrun your fate.

Maybe there's something wrong with him, maybe he has forgotten something as big as a whole town. Except that he has his memories and he knows they're real, knows that something has changed but it isn't him. He crawls back into bed and kicks the sheets down to the bottom. Just a dumb dream.

Regina reaches up and wipes away the tears on Emma's cheek, sweeping her thumb along the line of Emma's jaw, and it's as easy as the next breath, the way Emma kisses her.

"Because?" Regina echoes softly, and Emma's eyes are bright bright bright and Regina can't look away even though her chest feels too tight and magic is dancing on her skin.

Rolling her eyes, Sophie puts her glass on the counter and grabs Tara's arm, jerking her closer. "You are an ass." And Sophie kisses her, one of her hands fisting in the fabric of Tara's dress.

She watches Maggie brush a careless hand across Sophie's shoulder and there's a twinge in her stomach. Not jealousy, but—she always forgets how easily Sophie pulls people in. She shouldn't, though, not when she has done the same thing.

Regina laughs, the sound a harsh crack; Kathryn winces and looks at her again because she's never seen the Evil Queen in Regina's eyes, but maybe now—still, no, it's missing. She wonders sometimes if it was ever there at all. Regina/Kathryn, Ice Queen

Every time she thinks she has her feet firmly planted on the ground, some curve ball manages to find her and wreck it all over again. Even now, when she looks at Regina and wonders what it would feel like to touch her cheek, trace her fingers over soft skin. Her legs start to move restlessly, that old urge to run flaring up from her toes straight through her heart.

It's enough, just enough to make her remember the mine and the closing portal all over again. It wouldn't have happened if they had left her behind. Henry would be safe, he would be with family and not alone because that was the whole point. He isn't supposed to be another name she can add to the list of those she has loved and failed.

It starts when Emma turns to look at Henry in the backseat of Regina's car and sees how hard he's trying to keep from crying, his hands shaking on the pages on his comic book, and Regina driving too fast, jaw clenched and tears shining in her eyes.
