After a long haitus on my story, I've decided to restart and rewrite it all together! Keep an eye out for an update! Written in 2007 - Please read this, and tell me what you think of it. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone A wizard? Him? How could he possibly be? He’d spent his life being clouted by Dudley and bullied by Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon; if he was really a wizard, why hadn’t they been turned into warty toads every time they’d tried to lock him in his cupboard? If he’d once defeated the greatest sorcerer in the world, how come Dudley had always been able to kick him around like a football? Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Dumbledorepaused, and although his voice remained light and calm, and he gave no obvious sign of anger, Harry felt a kind of chill emanating from him and noticed that the Dursleys drew very slightly closer together. “You did not do as I asked. You have never treated Harry as a son. He has known nothing but neglect and often cruelty at your hands.” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Could Dumbledore have let such things happen? Had he been like Dudley, content to watch neglect and abuse as long as it did not affect him? Here are the words I have picked out: Clouted Bullied Neglect Cruelty Abuse These are just a few of them. There are many, many more. I looked at every page in the series for information on the Dursleys. I have just chosen the important ones. Apart from looking at just words, I also found a piece in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that really made me curious. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets There were screams from the dining room and Uncle Vernon burst into the kitchen to find Harry, rigid with shock, covered from head to foot in Aunt Petunia’s pudding. At first, it looked as though Uncle Vernon would manage to gloss the whole thing over (“Just our nephew – very disturbed – meeting strangers upsets him, so we kept him upstairs…”) He shooed the shocked Masons back into the dining room, promised Harry he would flay him to within an inch of his life when the Masons had left, and handed him a mop. Aunt Petunia dug some ice-cream out of the freezer and Harry, still shaking, started scrubbing the kitchen clean. But that’s not it. After the owl came and Harry read the letter out loud… Harry looked up from the letter and gulped. “You didn’t tell us you weren’t allowed to use magic outside school,” said Uncle Vernon, a mad gleam dancing in his eyes. “Forgot to mention it… slipped your mind, I dare say…” He was bearing down on Harry like a great bulldog, all his teeth bared. “Well, I’ve got news for you boy… I’m locking you up… you’re never going back to that school… never… and if you try and magic yourself out – they’ll expel you!” And laughing like a maniac, he dragged Harry back upstairs. He says he’s going to flay Harry to within an inch of life after the pudding accident. What does he do to Harry after the owl as well then? And then it just says and laughing like a maniac, he dragged Harry back upstairs. What happens? What does it mean? There’s also another sentence from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. It isn’t long but it has a small significance of importance. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Harry ran down the stairs two at a time, coming to an abrupt halt several steps from the bottom, as long experience had taught him to remain out of arm’s reach of his uncle whenever possible. Here is another fact that shows the Dursleys more or less starved him. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry was the least surprised by this, because he had suffered periods of near starvation at the Dursleys’. And here is another fact proving that Harry thought of the Dursleys as something unpleasant. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire The rest of the journey passed pleasantly enough; Harry wished it could have gone on all summer, in fact, and that he would never arrive at King’s Cross… but as he had learnt the hard way that year, time will not slow down when something unpleasant lies ahead, and all too soon the Hogwarts Express was slowing down at platform nine and three quarters. What are other facts that we know about the Harry and the Dursleys relationship? · He was made to live in a cupboard under the stairs for 10 years of his life, even though there was a spare bedroom in the house. · On his 10th birthday, and presumably other birthdays before, Harry was given a coat hanger and a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks. · The last time he was given money from the Dursleys, was when he was 6 years old. · When Harry was 12 years old, he was locked in his room (when he finally got one), had bars on his window, had a cat flap to pass small amounts of food and was only allowed out twice a day, to go to the bathroom. · No sign showed in the house that Harry lived at the Dursleys. · Harry never mentioned the Dursleys household as his house. It was always ‘At the Dursleys’, never ‘At my house’. · Dudley and his friends used to beat Harry up at school. · Aunt Marge, had whacked Harry in the shins to stop him beating Dudley in musical statues. . Aunt Marge's dog, Ripper, had chased Harry up a tree when he had accidentally stepped on the Ripper's paw. The Dursleys didn't let him down from the tree until after midnight. . Dudley's favourite form of entertainment was watching Harry get bullied by Uncle Vernon. · He was made to wear Dudley’s old clothes. (By the way, all information I use on this investigation, comes from only the books. You cannot trust the internet to be truthful. I will always use the books for any investigation.) Doesn’t this prove that the Dursleys treated Harry worse than he usually let on? If you put all the small comments and phrases together, it all fits as the bigger picture. · He always stuck to Hagrid, the one, in Harry’s eyes, saved him from the Dursleys. · He was small and skinny for his age. · Never boastful. · Very surprised when he, for the first time, saw Hogwarts meals. These are just a few though. If you dig deep, you see more than you were planning to. |
