He was a simple man from a simple town with only one simple desire: to help save Skyrim from a corrupted empire. Maybe after that he'd settle down, have a family of his own, and live out his daily life with a hard, honest trade and a belly full of mead. Obviously, standing in the ashes of dragonfire with his sword pledged to the Dragonborn wasn't exactly part of Ralof's plan.
