Reviews for A Good Son
Guest chapter 11 . 10/25/2018
I’d like to thank you for all your stories! I’m a fan of you writing. “A Good Son” is my favourite, although the adventures of the musketeers in Berner Bärengraben almost rivals with it . Most of all I love how you explore the depth of the characters of all four boys and in the same time not let them fall OOC. You never become naïve, pathetic, whiny or illogical. I like that your Athos even in the deepest point of his guilt and self-loathing beholds his core of a grand noble and nevertheless manages to be down to earth and totally loyal to his new family of choice. Humble and majestic in the same time. And the way, how you show, that probably this (the Inseparables) was not Athos’ family just by choice, but most of all by love. Athos didn’t choose d’Artagnan to be in his family. It just happened to Athos’ battered heart, that he started to love the boy. Most likely it has been the same with the way, how Porthos and Aramis earlier joined his family. I like how you capture d’Artagnan as somebody who even wounded, chased and after losing his father and all his earlier being manages to behold his pride and self-confidence unshakable, how his vitality and life-energy is bigger than his grief and disorientation in the new situation. How you do not fall to the trap, where most of ficwriters fall, not to describe him just as a lost child. Athos would never tell to de Tréville that d’Artagnan would probably grow into the greatest musketeer of them all, if d’Artagnan would be just a lost and grieving child. Athos just detected the unusual power of the character of the boy. I love how your Porthos’ softness and kindness are bigger than the famously big and strong bulk of his body, how the strength of his heart overwhelms his physical strength more than thousand times. And that you not let your Aramis to be to sugar sweet, how you let him to have his bitter and sharp edges, too. All four boys in your stories are so human, and their relationships are so multidimensional. I like how you find dangerous adventures for them to discover their characters and how you never lose the track of certain historicity and work on cultural, social or geographical accuracy in your stories as well. If you have some inspiration left to write fiction about musketeers, you have a devoted reader in me.
P.S. Sorry for my English, which is a foreign language for me.
Anniya Late chapter 1 . 9/5/2018
So, I've been absolutely devouring your work these past few days, thoroughly engrossed. Your writing is quite amazing. The descriptions, plots, interactions and characterizations are incredible. I read this whole story seeing every detail as if I were watching an episode.

There were many favorite parts, so many that I wish I'd started a quick notes on my phone to keep track of them so I could list every last one of them and gush about them properly. Off the top of my head, the synchronous "Puppy!" from Aramis & Porthos was so adorable and funny. Also, that Grandier could pull laughter from our beloved Athos warmed my heart and tickled me to no end at the choice of topic. The battles were very exciting and beyond well written. I love there was also a bit of whumpage (majorly in d'art's case). I don't always read the aftermath of battles and see them pushing through their bruises/injuries so it was nice to see. Oh, and Grandier in general was a great pleasure to read.

I'm sure there's a million other things I adored and am leaving out, but there's a chance I'll come back and comment again because this is definitely a fic that can be enjoyed multiple times.

I thoroughly enjoyed your story. You weave it well, especially in regards to adding tension and carrying it to a climax, then resolving your dangling threads. That is a gift, and a necessary one for a good story. You did it well. If I may, a critique? Not necessarily to fix in this story, but to watch for in future ones (as I hope you continue writing). Your battle scenes don't always have clear transitions; there are times I had to place where I was a couple sentences after I had moved from (for example) D'Artagnan from beneath horses to Porthos finding him attacked. I had to reread it three times before I realised what happened. Your story is worth that work, but again, perhaps something to watch for in the future? Thank you for the clean, good entertainment, and allowing me to live with some of my favorite characters for a while.

This isn't just another generic "D'Artagnan meets the Inseperables" story - it's got an enticing plot, great plot twists (the Spanish ambassador plotline mixed with the mission mixed with the old foes of Athos), an interesting character constellation (I especially like the idea that Athos wasn't fond of d'Art at first) and original minor characters like the priest. I also adore your writing style! Overall a fantastic story! Thanks for sharing.

Sad to come to the end of this story, but what a great read this was. Made my weekend. :) Loved seeing the development of that special big brother/little brother bond between Athos and d'Artagnan. Perfect!
Hawaiichick chapter 10 . 10/30/2016
What an packed chapter! I don't know what's sexier, Aramis' deadly accuracy w/ a gun or Athos dueling barefooted. I'll take both pls. ;)
Guest chapter 6 . 10/28/2016
Oooh, interesting turn in events!
Hawaiichick chapter 1 . 10/27/2016
Ok, now I just want to mother and smother poor d'Artagnan.
Runner043 chapter 9 . 3/3/2016
I'm liking this character Grandier. He's got an excellent grasp on faith. God does not care how we worship, only that we do.

After reading A Different Perspective I needed to read more - so have reached back to A Good Son; and am so glad I did! I read all eleven chapters in one fell swoop! Wonderful, wonderful story! Enjoyed each and every chapter! The growing fondness here between Athos and d'Artagnan was absolutely perfect! The villan was despicable and of course I just loved Athos running him though; the man's last words bubbling up through his throat had me cheering! Thanks for this great read!

Luv this !
Me thinks you capture the guys, dynamics just right !
The coffee part is cute, but I seem to remember that this indispensable beverage made its appearance in France under Louis the Fourteenth...
pain in the mikta chapter 2 . 11/22/2015
Nicely plotted and written !

And indeed, no one seemed to think the old crow and co would be witnesses to incriminate d'Artagnan in the murder of the ambassador : good thinking !
