He watches the war from the sidelines, and spends every Wednesday afternoon at the only payphone on the island, waiting for her call.

"All the joking was out of his tone when he broke the heavy silence she'd let fall, 'Why do you keep coming, Romanoff? Why do you come here? Why aren't you more pissed that he's playing hard to get'" Post-Age of Ultron

He wants to take her out because she makes him remember that fabled, faded man who could simply date. The barriers he's constructed to ward away a world he can so easily hurt, she whittles away piece by piece, layer by layer, until all that remains is them. (Brutasha date, one-shot)

Maintaining a relationship is hard enough for a normal couple, but when one of the participants is a Russian superspy and the other is likely to turn into a monstrous creature of uncontrollable strength and rage at the drop of a hat, it makes things considerably more complicated. Still they find ways to make it work.

She'd thrown both their ledgers open and put all of their darkest demons on display. He should have hated her for that.

An incident leaves Natasha wishing for an end to it all, but she eventually realizes who, and what, she'd leave behind.

On the day of the Chitauri invasion, Natasha experienced real fear for the first time in her life when the Hulk chased her through the helicarrier, intent on ending her life. He likes the idea of calling things what they are better than the actuality, and so he calls himself "Bruce" or "the other guy" when what he means is always "me." So they're not a team. But they're definitely something. Bruce/Natasha.
