:) Hello, this is a message to native English-speakers who review fics in French. First of all, I LOVE English language. I read all Harry Potter books in English and I really, really love it. I'm a native French-speaker and I love French language too because, well, all kids love their mother. I read in both languages and I love them both but I write in French because it's much easier for me. Second, I love it when I get reviews. Constructive criticism is the most wonderful thing a writer can get. When someone sends me a review, I don't care about this person's nationality. I'm just grateful because this person spent a little time to give me his/her opinion about my work. Third, a couple of years ago, I was walking in Paris when a girl walked to me and said: "hey, where's the subway station?" in English. She didn't say: "hello, do you speak English?" first. She just assumed that I HAD TO understand her mother language, just because I was a random girl she had met in a street. I know I might sound like an arrogant French jerk but I felt offended. That's cultural. In France, it is considered polite to say "do you speak English?" first when you want to say something in English. When someone sends me a review in English, I prefer when it begins with the words "Bonjour, je ne parle pas bien français. (Hello, my French is not very good. I'll review in English, if you don't mind). That's just polite. I wouldn't mind reviews written with an automatic translator if automatic translators were reliable but unfortunately, they're not. Language students even have fun with them when they get bored: they translate a random text and burst into laughter. I mean, they translate "George Bush" into "George Buisson" (George little tree)! When someone sends me a review he/she translated with an automatic translator, I feel grateful because I love reviews, but at the same time, I feel frustrated because I don't understand what this person says. So, if you don't speak French (which is perfectly OK, there are a very big lot of languages I don't speak myself) and still want to send me a review, could you please say you don't speak French and then review in English? I know I may sound like an arrogant French jerk (and possibly a cheese-eating fashionista who never washes) but that's how I feel. I hope I didn't bother you too much. Have a good day! :) |
