If you've arrived here by way of my Sherlock C2 community, I'll first say that I have been on the FanFiction site for ages -- since 2004. My goal here is to *do my research* and find great stories for people who are too busy to do it themselves. Mine is primarily a non-slash community but (as will be obvious) not completely. Also, for the most part, I'm not interested in OC stories and you'll find relatively few listed.

A few words of advice to authors: do yourself a favor and “DO NOT” write any variation of ”I suck at summaries” in your story summary (unless you really don't want anyone to read your story which would be odd). Those self-deprecating *warnings* are usually a sign that you really should have made the effort. If you don’t take the time to do that, I usually assume you didn’t put much effort in the story itself. A good summary can draw a lot of readers; a poor one, just the opposite.

My favorite story in the Sherlock category is Things We Lost in the Flames by O'Donnell. It is a truly remarkable story that deserves more attention.

At one point I reviewed a lot (in the Lord of the Rings category) - nearly 1900 times according to my stats page. Absurd, I know, but indicative of my rather obsessive ADD personality. I can't do that anymore but do like to encourage good authors with a review now and then and I do appreciate authors who leave a 'thanks for the review' message. I'm definitely more inclined to review their works on a more regular basis. It's not absolutely necessary, certainly, but it is helpful.

Like many of you, I wrote 'fan fiction' in my head, wrote some actual stories of my own, grew up, got on with life and then, succumbed to the lure of fan fiction for real when the internet made sites like this possible. I like to write but for now, at least, am content to read the imaginings of others.

Truth is, I am very late to the Sherlock fandom and actually, only saw my first episode in February 2017. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are so perfectly cast! I honestly just decided to watch it on a whim, on a day when I didn't have anything else to do. Bonus for me was I didn’t realize at first that Benedict was the actor who played Khan (the villain I had been so fervently rooting for) in Star Trek Into Darkness.

And while I am a prolific reader, I cannot claim to having read all the stories on my C2. Some, certainly. But...I do read enough of each one to decide if the quality level I expect in a good story is there and I feel confident that I know a good story when I see one (although I reserve the right to change my mind sometimes). I scour the site by all sorts of ways, look for my favorite authors own favorite authors, and such. It's a pretty foolproof way to find great stories.

I am quite a stickler for the basics -- spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc., and I'm usually embarrassed when I find the ones that I make myself. A story that presents well in those areas stands out immediately and I am much more apt to read it. I do have a major interest in Sherlock angst and hurt/comfort, as you may have already noticed;-)

Generally, I avoid stories that are overly explicit, gratuitously or unnecessarily violent, amateurishly written, with characters that are too out of character, or that have a lot of swearing.
