![]() Author has written 1 story for One Piece, and Mass Effect. Basic information: Year of birth: 1989 Gender: Male Country of Origins: Denmark Well I am absolutely horrible at writing shit like this, but fuck it. Let's give it a go. Been a rather big reader on site for a few years now, mainly because I'm horrible at stopping when it comes to things I enjoy. I usually pick series and franchieses to follow based on world and character building but there are probably some exeptions here and there. What I choose to write is rarely based on the shippings I follow. Instead my interest are more in exploring worlds or cenarios in the series I enjoy. To that end I have 4 or 5 stories I would like to write eventually but since they are all pretty damn long I'll go through them and finish one at a time, starting with 'Pirates in Space'. Now on to general information that can be taken as supplement to my stories. This is mainly information that I simply can’t write into the story in general and would take up WAAAAAAAAAAAY to much space for a simple AN so here we go: About Pirates in Space: This starts with the whole killing thing that is sure to come up regarding Pirates in Space. Now the thing is a lot of people see One Piece as a somewhat standard Shounen manga/anime, where we follow a group of heroes. This is distinctly not the case however. The story as it has progressed so far has put the Straw Hats in positions where they often have the moral high ground, but once one starts looking a bit further into the reasoning behind per say; stopping Crocodile, Enel, Don Krieg and pretty much every other villain in the story, there is always one detail that connects them all. They attacked either a Straw Hat or one of their friends first. This can be said all the way from Alvida to Doflamingo. Prior to the Straw Hats they are generally very apathetic towards everything around them. There are a few instances where this is displayed subtly and some where they are directly stated. At Cocoyashi Luffy simply refused to so much as listen to the islands plight before Nami directly asked him for his help. On Skypiea Nami pretty quickly found out something was very fucked up about the place during her first short visit to upper yard, and the crews over all decision was to simply leave, before they were forced into going there. And the most telling one would be at Syrup village where Luffy, Zoro and Nami flat out told Usopp they were saving his town because they respected him, not because of sympathy, be that for either him or his village. Now my point with this isn’t that they are bad people, but in no way should they be seen as over the top heroes. They are anti-heroes and very selfish ones at that in each their own way, and they show it throughout the series. Be that from Zoro beating the hell out of an army so he can steal a coat, to Robin going against the will of the world government to satisfy her curiosity, to Luffy crushing the hopes and dreams of every person in his way to become pirate king. The last part brings us to the scrupulousness of the crew. Very few of them have very strong moral compasses, if they even have one at all. If you ever look at the arcs from the villain’s perspective you’ll notice how little Luffy actually care about the dreams of people who isn’t a friend of his. Don Krieg as an example, had the exact same dream as Luffy, to become the pirate king, the moment Luffy heard that, he singled him out as an opponent he needed to beat, and subsequently crushed Krieg’s hopes and dreams. The same can again be said for Kuro, Arlong, Wapol and a lot of the others. The only one who didn’t really get his dream crushed was Enel whom we saw get his dream fulfilled in the small chapter spin offs. Now like I stated earlier Luffy and co. pretty much always have the moral high ground over people like Krieg and Kuro, because this is aimed at young boys as well as playing to older fans and Oda likes to tell a story that’s very simple in its complexity. So the villains are deplorable either by being dishonorable and generally being horrible human beings. But it does not take away from the fact that Straw Hat crew in general aren’t the best people in the world either. And that brings us to my point about killing. We them doing very little of this overall in the series which I would mainly attribute to, again, the show being marketed to a younger audience than your usual western manga/anime fan. That doesn’t mean that they never kill or at the very least aim to kill. Our very first show of this comes as early as the Boggy arc, where Zoro (without prior knowledge to Buggy’s devil fruit) slices Buggy in half, and later on in the same arc Luffy sends him flying, Team Rocket style, into the unknown, knowing full well they are on a small island and that Buggy can’t swim. It simply keeps going from there. The very next arc Zoro mentions twice that he’s surprised the Nyaban brothers survived his attacks (one for each of them). And that’s before we even start counting all the confirmed kills. Zoro and Robin respectively we know for a fact have both killed prior to meeting Luffy. Robin was an assassin and Zoro killed the previous Mr. 7. After meeting Luffy we know from the reveal of Zoro’s first bounty that while he ‘defeated’ Daz Bones he also killed 100 bounty hunters in whiskey peaks. And that brings us to the topic that has most to do with Pirates in Space: CANNON FODDER No one in the series is generally shown to go lightly at the fodder in the show even if they are all miles above them all when it comes to strength and abilities, not to mention every single one on the straw hat crew is pretty damn deadly to begin with. A lot of them speak for themselves really, Zoro and Brook both use swords, Luffy and Sanji breaks rocks with their attacks. Robin is breaking necks and spines left, right and center and Franky uses everything from mechanically enhanced strength to guns and cannons, from flamethrowers to air pressure cannons so strong it can knock down walls. Chopper even prior to his monster form has been seen to cave in bones when in arm point and outside of that his tactical skills have proven him capable and willing to use deadly force (see his fight in Alabasta). Usopp has shown us a myriad of deadly weapons and tactics, from the reject dial to using gas in dial to cause some of the biggest explosions in the series (see fight vs. Luffy). Nami attacks people with fucking lightning bolts, while sure the chance of death by lightning is only around 10%, there are more often than not large scale permanent damage to the body. Now either the standard fodder marine/pirate/civilian is about as resilient as cockroach, or they are dying in drones off panel. My guess is on the later and this is the reasoning I go forth with in my story. Thanks for taking the time to read though all of this. If you have anything you’d like me to expand on, feel free to leave me a private message and I’ll give it a shot. |
