The room is quite similar, however; empty and cold save for the lumpy mattress she's laying on.

"Ioch'ba..." River's voice came breathless and weakened from behind his palm. "I thought I told you to call me Io." It helped the man to pretend shit wasn't hitting the fan when she didn't call him by his full name—not that it isn't obvious from the fact that she was currently trying to navigate the most guarded city on Gallifrey in late stages of labor.

The Doctor leans towards his wife and presses a kiss to her temple. Words, he knows, are not worth trying to figure out now. Despite being his best weapon, he finds that they are very much not useful in situations like this; moments where there's nothing the words will change. Prompt: River and the Doctor are at some planet and they don't realize it's a fertility festival and River ends up pregnant very quickly going through the stages.

She didn't enjoy thinking about it much, but all of that genetic engineering and in-vitro procedures that had been done to her, well, it wasn't just Gallifreyan DNA they used to make her a weapon. She's not completely sure what else was used, but as result, she was a bit of a biological wonder- in the sense that she was practically impossible. (This is why she disliked hospitals.)

It strikes him like a blow to the chest. The Doctor doesn't even know what triggered the thought or how he's figured it out. All he has been doing was thinking about his wife, his very pregnant wife, when it clicks. He remembers, when he hadn't know her, that she was lying. Lying about her pain, lying about what was under that perception filter.
