Copied from FanFiction Content Guidelines. Because some people have never seen this before or need reminding... Community Etiquette: FanFiction does not filter content and is an open system that trusts the writer's judgement. However, there is an inherent responsibility that falls to writers as a result. Here is a list of conducts that should always be observed: 1. Spell check all story and poetry. There is no excuse for not performing this duty. If you do not have a word processor that has the spell checking feature, use a search engine such as to find one. 2. Proofread all entries for grammar and other aspects of writing before submission. 'Hot off the press' content is often riddled with errors. No one is perfect but it is the duty of the writer to perform to the best of his/her ability. 3. Respect the reviewers. Not all reviews will strictly praise the work. If someone rightfully criticizes a portion of the writing, take it as a compliment that the reviewer has opted to spend his/her valuable time to help improve your writing. 4. Everyone here is an aspiring writer. Respect your fellow members and lend a helping a hand when they need it. Like many things, the path to becoming a better writer is often a two way street. 5. Use proper textual formatting. For example: using only capital letters in the story title, summary, or content is not only incorrect but also a disregard for the language itself. If you are pissed off at my review because you think I was being rude, take note: (If you are responding to a comment, carefully and thoroughly reading the text below may potentially save you a lot of time, tears, and effort. You're welcome.) I think it's rude that you don't spell check. I assume that since you have access to a computer with internet, then you probably have access to a dictionary or spell checker. I think its rude that you don't use proper grammar. Or at least try to. Come on people, a writer without correct grammar is like someone trying to paint without a brush. Unless you are 4 years old, I don't appreciate finger-painting. Other four-year-olds might, if that's the audience you're aiming for. Don't expect intelligent reviewing in that case. OMG!!Lik PLEZZ update!!XXD What can you do with that? Thoughtful writing invokes thoughtful, USEFUL feedback. I think it's rude to not give proper warnings or ratings for your fic. I don't care if you like slash, het, pedo, incest, whatever. Have a ball. Just don't shove it in my face. I think it's rude to delete reviewer's comments, even if they're flames. I never did that to any of my reviewers back when I was posting stories. Your opinion is not more important than anyone else's, and if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. (And don't whine about flamers to other readers in author's notes. Everyone gets negative, even insulting, criticism. You only take away from your own story because now the appreciative readers feel like they have to babysit you.) I think it's rude to hold stories hostage for reviews. Nobody is obligated to read your story, much less review. You should write for the pleasure of it, not to boost your ego. If reviews are all you're concerned about, I'll be the first to kick your story to the curb. If I've somehow offended your delicate sensibilites: First, look in the mirror and ask yourself: "Am I prone to being overly-defensive?" "Do I have a social disorder that causes me to raise my hackles over little things?" "Did I not receive enough attention from Mommy and Daddy when I was a kid?" "Is my only source of human interaction via reviews from readers and so my feelings are devastated when someone doesn't like/agree with an aspect of my story and makes the grievous error of stating said dislike/disagreement?" Be honest with yourself. Should any of the above describe you in any small fashion, then as a preclude to any misunderstandings when you write your whining/scathing/foul-mouthed/illiterate/small-minded responses, this is my universal reply: Go play in traffic. I have included a helpful list of authors who meet one or more of the mentioned criteria: JayTang, Smouged88, SpeshaSpak, Blue Pheonix-wolf, FiOeX, LyricaBelachium Don't criticize these authors, even as a non-flame. They can't cope with it. (Seriously, they all blew up like diva-grenades. Kind of amusing in a way. Prada everywhere.) You may become the unsuspecting cause of their suicide via spontaneous combustion. On second thought...go ahead. Anyone else I should add to the list? I'm open for recommendations...:) Think of this as a public service. If we can flush these little buggers out, FFN can become a safer and happier place for everyone with more operating brain cells than a nematode. Or offer Xanax. I think I should be able to have fun reading fanfiction without having to lower my standards or IQ. And to those of you who feel like you must babysit your favorite authors and hound other reviewers for daring to comment against them, get a life. And if you're the type of author who can't handle honesty, tell me so I can wrap my next review in cyber flowers and fake smiles. |
