Set after 'The Saint of Last Resorts.' The trio throw themselves into a case to forget what happened in Mexico. It takes them to the backwoods of Michigan and pits them against an evil so overwhelming, they might not survive it.

"Keith?" Shiro's voice is barely a whisper, hoarse and wavering with disbelief. Conflicting emotions seize Keith's heart at the sound of Shiro's voice: utter relief in that they've finally found him; sheer horror in that they've found him here, of all places.

It's four months into their time in space, after becoming Paladins, that Keith finally realizes something important about his partner. Shiro hasn't had a heat since he's been back. That leaves open some... interesting possibilities.

Keith is the current 'Prince' of the Galra empire; a title passed down to each new chosen student of Emperor Zarkon's, which are usually geniuses or prodigies. Keith's problem is that he's a halfblood, too small by Galra standards, even though his skill more than makes up for it. So, when he sees a mouthy, freshly taken slave shout at the Emperor, he decides it's an opportunity.

It takes some time for Shiro to feel comfortable again, after Sendak's attack on the castle and then the subsequent 'haunting' of it by the infected Galra crystal. But when he does relax back into life, Keith has a gift for him. The cuffs Sendak used to hold him; the only thing they've ever found that can restrain his Galra arm.

The plan to rescue Allura doesn't go nearly as smoothly as anyone dared to hope. Keith engaged in direct battle against Zarkon; Lance, Pidge, and Coran struggling to keep their excape route open; and Allura and Hunk trying to get an injured Shiro back to his Lion, so they can make it out in time. They're just a few minutes too slow, and Shiro starts to believe that the whole thing

Shiro knew it was a bad idea to let Keith talk him into fooling around in the semi-public showers. Knew it, but did it anyway. It's not entirely surprising that someone walks in on them.

When Zarkon's forces arrive at Earth, there's no warning. Shiro never escapes Galra custody, Lance never finds the Blue Lion, and the Galra find and take exactly what they want; the Lion, it's semi-crazy boy defender, and a collection of prisoners from the nearby Garrison. Shiro does the best he can to save the one person he can from getting put into the arena with him. Keith.
