Author has written 2 stories for Legend of Korra. “Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.” What's gone, and what's past help, Airports see more sincere kisses than wedding halls. The walls of hospitals have heard more prayers than the walls of churches. When captured birds grow wiser, they try to open the cage with their beaks. They don't give up, because they want to fly again. I can't help it if I'm sharp when I shatter. We were all born on days when too many people died in terrible ways, but you still have to call it a birthday, y'all. When tragedies strike, we try to find someone to blame. And in the absence of a suitable candidate, we usually blame ourselves. Once when I couldn’t stop the wind, I broke the chimes. Picture yourself when you were five. In fact, dig out a photo of little you at that time and tape it to your mirror. How would you treat her, love her, feed her? How would you nurture her if you were the mother of little you? I bet you would protect her fiercely while giving her space to spread her itty-bitty wings. She’d get naps, healthy food, imagination time, and adventures into the wild. If playground bullies hurt her feelings, you’d hug her tears away and give her perspective. When tantrums or meltdowns turned her into a poltergeist, you’d demand a loving time-out in the naughty chair. From this day forward I want you to extend that same compassion to your adult self. Create a life that feels good on the inside, not one that just looks good on the outside. |
