"I want to read a great many things to my children from the time they are quite young—stories of heroes and stories of history, speeches from Shakespeare and long passages of Scripture, children's stories and grown people's stories and little stories in Latin and very long stories indeed. Anything, anything that was good and lovely and pure and noble, that lifts the mind and calls the soul to higher things. Children should be given the courage of the Norse, the philosophy of MacDonald, the logic of Lewis, the poetry of Donne, the wisdom of the Book, the beauty of the earth, the faith of Abraham, the hope of Paul, and the Love of Christ Himself."
OFG95, September 2011

From the time I was six years old, I have read anything I can get my hands on and delighted in story well told. Books that have shaped and stuck with me include the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Little Britches books by Ralph Moody, Elizabeth Tudor by Marguerite Vance, St. Louis and the Last Crusade by Margeret Ann Hubbard, Flatland by Edwin Abbot, Le Morte D’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, Idylls of the King by Alfred Lord Tennyson, Alice in Quantumland by Robert Gilmore, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, After the Flood by Bill Cooper, Kingdom Tales by David and Karen Mains, A Wrinkle in Time and sequels by Madeline L'Engle, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling, Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan, and of course the Bible and the Chronicles of Narnia.

In July 2011 I finally read all the Chronicles (in about three days), became utterly obsessed with them, looked for the Lion at the back of all stories, and began work on getting Susan back to Narnia after the Last Battle, in what turned into my three-part Susan arc, beginning with A Weary Way.

On my LiveJournal I have headcanon stuff, bits of commentfic, timelines, original fic and nonfic.

Live long and write bookverse!

Collected Quotes:

"It's a jolly good thing it wasn't you was hurt. I'm glad it was me. There! If it had been you, you'd have been lying on the sofa looking like a suffering angel and being the light of the anxious household and all that. And I couldn't have stood it." Peter to Bobbie in The Railway Children, by E. Nesbit.

"The younger gods again shall meet
In Idavellir's pastures sweet,
And tales shall tell of ancient doom,
The Serpent and the fire and gloom,
And that old King of Gods recall
His might and wisdom ere the fall.
There marvelous shall again be found
Cast in the grass upon the ground
The golden chess wherewith they played
When Asgard long ago was made,
When all their courts were filled with gold
In the first merriment of old."
J. R. R. Tolkien, "The Prophecy of the Sybil," from The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrun. This poem is amazingly reminiscent of The Last Battle (and those golden chess always make me think of the beginning of Prince Caspian), for both were drawing on Norse mythos and the Voluspa.

"But when I hear you laughing so carelessly, I feel like I have to carry Narnia for the both of us. Because one day you will want it back."
Peter, speaking of Susan, from Francienyc's Kings in Exile, chapter 4.

"In a thousand words I can have the Lord's Prayer, the 23rd psalm, the Hippocratic oath, a sonnet by Shakespeare, the Preamble to the Constitution, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and almost all of the Boy Scout Oath. Now exactly what picture were you planning to trade for all that?" Roy H. Williams

"Prince Arthur gave a boxe of Diamond sure.
Embowed with gold and gogeous ornament,
Wherein were closd few drops of liquor pure,
Of wondrous worth, and vertue excellent,
That any wownd could heale incontinent."
Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene, Book I, Canto IX, Stanza XIX. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like Lucy's Cordial?

King Tirian's Campaign Platform for the Presidential Race: "I'm the guy who isn't afraid to show his emotion. Meet me at the White Rock to hold a dialogue on the state of our country!"
Rose and Psyche and I came up with this one. We're rather fond of it.

"To some degree, the mind and soul seemed to shape themselves to the body, so childhood only felt like a vise for a few weeks. Then it became a set of too-tight clothes, then simply scratchy wool, and then even the itch was gone and Lucy was a girl in a girl's body, not a woman trapped in a perversion of nature." Elizabeth Culmer, "None Sing Hymns to Breath"
The idea of marvelously precocious children is definitely good story fodder, and I really love reading it, but in my own writing I've explored more in the the other direction.

"He tried not to understand that he was only half a boy and even less a Watchman, because an Old wizard is not truly himself without a king to pledge to, and Bran had given up that right (not realizing that he was, in the process, also giving up Will)." Why I hate the fridge-horror ending for TDIRS.

"Don't be tetchy, Peter," Mary scolded. "Asim and I are experts in intending to journey somewhere and ending up somewhere else, and we would have indeed been in the Okavango Delta without a canoe if we hadn't been prepared. For instance, Asim, do you remember the time we were trying to get from Zanzibar to Madagascar?"
"Vividly," Asim said helpfully. "We ended up on the West Coast of Australia."
"With only three packets of nuts and two tins of sardines for the width of the Indian Ocean!" Mary said gleefully.
"No," Asim corrected. "That was when we left Singapore, for Hong Kong and ended up in the Philippines looking for flying lizards."
"Correct me, Mary, if I err," Peter said, not concealing his irritation at all, "but there is no steamer transport involved between here and Cambridge. This is a train ride."
"But, trains are the most exciting, Peter! There are always possibilities! Asim and I once tried to get from Bombay to Kolkata, and we ended up at a base camp in the Himalayas."
"With no blankets," Asim said mournfully.
She nodded her agreement. "That was a very cold side trip."
Err, yes, it's rather a long quote, but one of my favorite exchanges from Oxfordshire, 1942, by the inimitable Rthstewart, and I couldn't bear to only quote a line.

"Ed! Are you still awake?" Lucy whispered beside him.
"Of course I am," he grumbled. "You're talking. Don't talk and I won't be."
"Aren't you the least bit excited we could find the prince in the morning?"
"I will be. In the morning."
"I can't sleep," she confessed in a whisper. "I keep thinking about Cor and the battle and where exactly everybody should go…"
"By the Mane, woman, count some Sheep. Silently," he ordered.
Lucy snuck her hand into Edmund's. He left it there.
Another long one, from What the Bards Did Not Know, by Starbrow, one of my favorite one-shots in the history of ever.
