Author has written 7 stories for Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Danny Phantom, Persona Series, High School DxD/ハイスクールD×D, Naruto, Campione!/カンピオーネ!, and Magic Kaito/まじっく快斗. Hello, everyone! Readerdreamer here! Finally motivated to actually fill this in! I'm a fan of a lot of anime, manga, games, and light novels, and I love reading fan fiction! I am the result of an ADHD child mixed with the oddest mixture of those above and various scientific influences, so expect me to sometimes go off tangent in my explanations. My pet peeves are 1) Bashing 2) Betrayal 3)Genderbends and Pedophilia 4) Sticks up people's asses! 5)New: Insanity. Not the good funny insane, but the broken, axe-killing (or even any kind of killing) kind of insane. Do throw stones at your characters, but don't break them! Honestly, the above was probably caused by too much anime... What I like are 1) Time Travel (Always works!) 2) BAMF!Characters 3) Crack and humor Things to know about me: If I'm smiling evilly, run LIKE HELL IS UPON YOU! If I'm cackling or laughing for no reason, give me a laptop. I have a new fic idea to type. If I start staring into space, I'm either asleep with eyes open or watching an anime or imagining a fic (Thank lord for higher mental faculties.) And if I'm using the computer, get the hell away from me. I have a very wide area of personal space, thank you very much! Expect me to update randomly, but nothing motivates me more than PMs, reviews, and fic recommendations, so please be a dear and send me my precious PRFrs OK? My dream is: To gain a page on TvTropes about one of my fics. Or a fic recommendation at least! Disclaimer: My OC in Bonds Unlocked is based upon two things I've read. First is the FSN series and second is DarkMasterStarr's To Stop the Future! (BCFireShadow, you better read it too. You'll find more inspiration in that fic!) Profile: Rules of Crossovers Alright, we all know them. Not all of us like them, and most of them aren’t that good anyway. But, as wannabe writers (and in-hiding successful ones – I’m looking at you guys) we all should know the rules for writing them. Au contraire, I don’t follow these rules much myself, even as their writer, so keep in mind that these are only as per rule of thumb. Generally they work. If you’re awesome enough (or bad enough, apparently) these rules won’t matter. But as those examples are pretty rare, it’s still best to know. 1. Compatibility of Source Sometimes, before you even start writing crossover fanfiction, you must first think of whether the decision of writing it is a good idea. Is World A compatible with World B? How about the character/s I’m thinking about? Would they work together? This is an important factor. The settings, the rules, the pseudo-explanations (applicable theories of magic, etc.) and the various handwaves and plot-holes all writers have are important to think about before you even start writing. For example (and a cringe-inducing one too), let’s take the tentative idea of crossing-over Bleach and Highschool DxD. For one, both of them are of very different genres, except for being supernatural, and the settings both have are so very different that they can’t mix at all. At all. Death gods vs devils vs angels vs other deities magical creatures? Sounds interesting in first glance, but then you realize that the two settings are so different, and the plot would be so full of holes it might be used to wash dishes. For DxD, why weren’t Shinigami mentioned before? As for the Bleach side, why haven’t they taken into account devils and angels, and why weren’t hollows being reported as attacked by other magical beings? Of course, you can skip all those problems with the setting by just dragging one or few characters from one source world into the other. This brings us to… 2. World Priority If you look carefully, most successful crossovers have either mixed the two worlds together so magnificently that everything seems canon, or taking the other choice, just dropped a character in another world altogether. Welcome to the subject of World Priority. It isn’t as overt as the Compatibility problem, however it happens when writers get the tendency to write more about one setting than the other (or completely taking the other setting out of the equation, which also works). Let’s return to the headache of an example, shall we? Let’s say, as the writer, I chose to just take Kurosaki Ichigo and get some plot device to take him out of his world and into DxD. That way, there would be a simple, but working, solution to the whole Compatibility problem in which it is only logical to follow the rules of the prioritized world because – really, does the other world matter anymore? Of course, unless plot dictated. The problem with this is two-sided. One, is the reaction of said character to said priority. Let’s say, I chose Tohsaka Rin from Fate Stay/Night to be placed in Harry Potter world. Being the rational and methodical mind, it is only to be expected that a few chapters in, Rin would already be ranting about the sheer illogicality of their magic and population – thus, being prone to derailing the plot. (Unless the plot is a deconstruction. See Methods of Rationality in the HP fandom. Not a crossover, but a sample of that kind of deconstructive plot.) This is because of, again, compatibility. While the HP world is prioritized, it still doesn’t change the fact that to Rin’s character, the Nasuverse perception of Magus is very important. There is no way to write her differently so she would fit without completely changing her as a character – which brings us to the second reason. Two, the reaction of the fans of the less-prioritized world. While not as important to writing a good story per se, unless you take into account your audience, your good story would likely not become very popular. Take the Naruto crossover fandom for example. Everyone and their pet goldfish has written a crossover (even I have, though it’s more of a roulette kind of reason… Bad luck on picking up KH and Naruto on the first try) on that fandom, and everyone is sick of it. Harem Naruto? Check that a few thousand times. OP Naruto? Sure, go ahead, and wait for the flames. Sometimes, you really should think about the cross before you write. Also, take in the point that just because the character came from World A into World B that the latter is the priority. If everything and anything written comes from the perspective of that character, in the end, World A is still the more-prioritized one of the two. 3. Characterization Then we still have to consider the last thing. Characterization. I.E. Whether your character makes sense or not. This is already a central thing for all writers, but doubly so for those who plan to write crossovers. One, it’s only logical to assume that since the status quo has changed, the characters would do the same. For example, if we’re talking about a Free! and One Piece crossover (I shudder at the thought of overly sparkly pirates) around here, the first step is getting the characters correctly. Then fully submerge them into your new canon. If someone is scared of the water (I’m looking at you Makoto) then it’s only logical to take that into account first. Get him a Devil Fruit if you decide to have him keep that. Or, you can keep it the same, but try to compensate on something else and keep it a factor for all the scenes. Character development is a must – a sudden huge change in the environment (or universe for that matter) around you is not something most people could ignore or pass off as nothing. There are many mental steps one has to take before finally accepting that fact. Your characters would have to do same. A special subject is on pacifism; there are plenty of crossovers out there that conveniently forget to take into account that one of the two world’s main characters have never killed nor shown to have killed before. This is one that I frown upon. The subject of pacifism is a very crucial plot detail, and the inconsideration of it is a huge red flag. Please, take it into account, or at least handwave it with an explanation as to why the supposedly-pacifistic character suddenly has no problems stabbing a knife into another person’s head. Now, you know the three rules for writing crossovers. There are probably a lot more, like several case-specific ones, but these are meant to be applicable to most examples. Do note that I never used the word ‘always’ in this set of rules. This is because, in the end, they are only guidelines. You could ignore these rules if you want, but as I said, tread carefully where you step. Yes, you might create the ultimate fic, but it’s highly likely that you would write pure crap. Take it from me – I’ve been there. The Three Genres: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Drama - What Differentiates Them? As a writer of two admittedly angst-heavy, ploddingly-written fics that had somehow gone popular, I have received various compliments on my writing on my wonderful usage of 'angst' themes - even to the point people ask: "Why is this not in the Angst category?" I shall is all in the degree of focus. Plus, with the way FF . net categorizes its themes, I suppose people make the mistake of seeing these three genres as separate identities. Let me define the three of them, shall we? 1. Angst - The expression of conflicted emotion, of negative thoughts and feelings. This make take the form of righteous anger, depression, or even stoicism. 2. Hurt/Comfort - Angst, when followed by emotional support by one or more characters. Sometimes, said support is returned, allowing for co-dependence. 3. Drama - A cycle between the above two. Sometimes a happier theme is inserted in between, which ultimately only adds to the drama. Now, do you see what I mean? What I hate about Naruto Fanfiction: 1. Please stop making those banishment and betrayal fics. First, it's illogical - heck, too illogical even for a world like the Elemental Nations. Why the hell would Konoha throw away their Jinchuuriki in the first place? Or why the hell would people like Kakashi, Hiruzen, Shikamaru, even Danzo and Shikaku even agree with that? 2. On the same note, do the same for ANBU and ROOT fics. Because I swear, from what I remember Hiruzen wouldn't let anything of the sort befall on Naruto, if not for their relationship, for his mental sanity. And why do you guys even think that's a good idea? They're both just glorified classifications of redshirts, or should I call it, ceramic-masks? Here are details: no one knows your name, you never win against any main character, and in the end, even if you are by the dozens you still die off? Here's one thing to remember. When Kakashi was on full suicidal-stage, he was in ANBU. The best of them, actually. What does that say about the idea of putting Naruto there? 3. About Sasuke: I know how Draco in Leather Pants my own characterization of him seems (heck, I took it to absurd levels. I'm still trying to fix that, so don't sue me just yet.) but I just can't see how SasuNaru works. By the way, while I'm straight, I fully accept all forms of love (except for necrophilia and bestiality... eek, if that doesn't tell something about the person's sanity, it should at least say something about his hygiene) so the homosexual pairing is not the problem here. The hate-love excuse doesn't work, as I really question the mind of the person who thinks repeated attempts of murder is fully acceptable as 'tsundere'. 4. Oh for the love of everything holy but I don't believe in anyways, Sakura isn't just a harpy! Yeah, she may have acted like a complete fangirl in Part 1, but I would've thought that Shippuden made it obvious enough about her mentality. The closest thing to describe her is this: she's a talented girl without any particular ambition. And so, when an ambition passes by in the form of Uchiha Sasuke, she grabbed at it. The problem with that was that the ambition wasn't good for anyone really, and when she replaced that with the will of taking back Sasuke to the team (similar aims, but different connotations), well, you get the second coming of Tsunade. 5. Since we're still on the subject of Team 7, let me rant about Kakashi. He isn't a lazy, ignorant bastard. He's not just a lazy bastard. He's a lazy, socially stunted, mentally scarred bastard with an obsession on teamwork. That obsession is particularly skewed with the perception that great teams form from either mutual enemy (namely Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura against him) or from life-or-death situations. Seeing how he finally reconciled with Obito, well who can blame him? Other than the therapists by the way. 6. ...Which brings us to the next subject. Really? No therapists in the Shinobi world (or at least their shinobi equivalents)? Try the Yamanaka or the daily dose of Naruto and pre-Madara Obito. 7. And lastly, Naruto is, unfortunately, a stubborn idiot. That point had been repeatedly drilled into me by one of my reviewers. So that means since he's stubborn about his beliefs, he a) doesn't fall into the dark that easily, especially post-Pain Arc. Even more so after the Falls of Truth. b) He's a blockhead as perceptive on the subject of love as a rock and just as romantic. Seriously. So, if you're going to ship anything, change that first! And don't make it like any nonsense about Kurama changing his hormones, as obviously other than the chakra that leaks automatically, nothing comes out of the seal, and thus changing his body! As fun as making Naruto an anthromorphic fox is, please stop doing it! Update: July 24 I've hit creative sterility over the past few days when it comes to writing fanfiction. Please, anyone, send me a good fanfiction or something - I really need to get back into the gear. To Become A Campione: After my computer crashed, I ended up losing the chapter. Now, while rewriting it, I'm in the process of correcting some errors... Current percentage: 80%, and I'm hitting a wall. It's A Huge Misunderstanding, Really! - Hiatus. I want to update! But no, Muse-chan isn't letting meeeeeeee... SkyWorld: 80%. Writing by the seat of my pants here, so please bear with me. Deconstruct: 30% Chapter delayed severely. Hit mental wall. Fics I wish to write: N'ron - How to Train Your Dragon - Friendship/Drama - A story of an old crone who tells stories. Kind of 'Characters reading Fanfiction', but played straight with a storyteller. Not humor at all, and crossover with Frozen, Rise of the Guardians, Tangled, and Brave. Yep, it's RTBFTD. Quote, "Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, hero amongst many, welcome to this old witch's house. Please do sit, I like having guests listening to my stories. Tell me, have you ever asked yourself, 'what if?'" Time and Again - Fate Stay Night - Adventure - Emiya Shirou became a Heroic Spirit due to CG EMIYA's influence in the Fifth Grail War. He had one wish, and that was to thank his infuriating alternate self and free him from his bonds. The Grail, in a bout of irony, summoned him for this wish in the Fourth Grail War under the control of a young Waver Velvet who believed in himself, not in artifacts. Let's see what happens then? GEN. And a writer's greatest sin: Story Prompts for the Taking (I just know I can't write them): In the Lines of Flames and Magic - KHR - Hogwarts AU. Nono as Headmaster. Iemitsu as teacher. So are the rest of the Arcobaleno (Reborn is of course, the sole DADA who lasted for more than one year). Post-Harry Potter Era. Of course, Tenth Generation in different Houses. What more to ask? Oh yeah, Tsuna's not a secret prodigy or suffering from schizophrenia. We have plenty of those stories around already. Betting Against Time - Naruto - Tsunade in Time-Travel AU. Just Tsunade, from a post-Pyrrhic ending of the fifth Shinobi War. How to Train Your Twin Brother - HTTYD - 'Val had Twins' AU. You can decide what character the twin has - only that it isn't the Abusive Brother/Sister. Please take into account Viking culture - especially with the rules around older twins. Color Me Sarcastic - HTTYD - Entire first HTTYD movie, in complete Kyon-style narration from Hiccup. You know how he started the movie? Well, continue the movie that way. Please, do keep it serious or sad when necessary. Reversal - Bleach - A slight twist on the old favorite. Reincarnation AU. Ichigo is reincarnated into one amnesiac Shiba Kaien. Not There - Pokemon - Ash Ketchum doesn't exist. Yet Misty and Brock, along with Tracy, May, Max, Dawn, and the rest meet up together, missing things that weren't there in the first place, sharing memories that have no basis. Then again, they could be right. A Game of Pokemon - Pokemon - Deconstruction of the Gamer AU. What if one day, Ash wakes up to see his world as the game? A Loss Much Felt - Naruto - Character Death. Naruto died. What now happens to the Elemental Nations? (You can decide at what part of the timeline this happens. Genre is also dependent on the situation.) Teacher - Bleach - AU. What happens if instead of Rukia, it's Shinji who stumbles into Ichigo before it all began? "If only people would act with their hearts on their sleeves... if only they would feel guilt whenever they hurt someone... if only people didn't hurry for anything, especially love... Wouldn't be the world be nice?" "I once asked a person on how he fell for his two-year girlfriend. He said, 'She was beautiful', and his girlfriend on his shoulder blushed at the praise. I, on the other hand, felt little surprise when they grew apart and broke up just a year later." "A man who thought himself wise once said to me, 'IGNORE THE GOVERNMENT; THEY ARE CONTROLLING US ALL!' I then asked in return, 'Who would you then place to put order over everyone then?' When he couldn't answer, I mentally-labelled him anarchist and left him where he stood." "I don't believe in God. Or if he existed, I refuse to believe in him being a perfect being - after all, what perfect omnipotent being would let the world go like this for all this time?" "Don't judge anyone harshly too quickly. You might be surprised on what you would see after a second look." "Depression is a self-sufficient downward spiral that no one other than the one depressed can banish completely. Medicines, psychiatrists? They help, surely, but it is only when a person learns to accept would they learn to step forward and leave the depressing thoughts behind." "Are you lonely, or are you alone of your own making?" "Look up. Raise your chin. Stride with poise. There, you look perfect- wait, don't forget to smile - ah there we go. Now, you're perfect." "Reality is reality. Fiction is fiction. Anyone who fails to see the difference is either a genius or in a desperate need for a psych evaluation. Either way, it would be a hard time for that person." "I like the quote 'Water, water everywhere. None of it fit to drink.'" "People. People everywhere. Few of them think." "I like fictional characters in that all of them have a purpose to exist. We? Well, I suppose we would have to create our own purpose then." |
