My purpose for writing here is to 1) have a creative hobby, 2) get writing the horrible first attempts out of the way on a place where anything bad can just sink to the bottom, 3) it is fun ("A War the Aliens Just Weren't Ready For" is a prime example), and 4) to learn how to write.

Things I have learned from writing

- Pacing is hard for a novel.

- I actually enjoy editing other people's work (see Saraak's Bladed Horizons).

- Remember to use a variety of sentence openers and transitions.

- Don't monolog.

- Show, not tell.

- Use metaphor and simile.

- Don't change viewpoints too fast

- Make sure to have a Beta-reader (Thanks Eiskralle1 and shadyxlr)

- Don't repeat yourself. Vary the word choice.

- Practice, practice, practice. Keep on practicing writing and you will (eventually) get better. Unless you are ridiculously talented and start off at very good. The rest of us need to practice and make mistakes to achieve those heights.

- Keep characters in character.

- Adjectives. Use them.

- Mysteries stories work better when everyone doesn't already know who the culprit is. (Something I should have considered before Technician's Order... Oops.)

- Keep the plot moving. Set-up is good but have some plot advancement while that happens. Keep a balance between the two.

- Trimming is a good idea when it comes to editing.

- When planning out a story, keep the principles of dramatic structure, namely exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and conclusion, in mind. Be aware that you can layer them inside the story such as having the rising action have its own minor rising action, climax, falling action and conclusion that lends itself to the main story.

-Passive voice is not good in story telling. Yes, you can write passively. However, your readers will not be interested. A rule of thumb for recognizing passive voice is to count how often you use "is", "was", "are", and "by" as verbs. If they are frequent, then you are writing passive voice. To get around this, change the sentence structure to using action verbs instead.

-When planning a story, instead of focusing on the idea alone, consider what genre of story you want to write. Do you want to write a comedy, a tragedy, an adventure, or an inspiring story? You can combine genres but the tone of your story matters and many stories will collapse under themselves if you don't have a type of story you writing. Awesome ideas work well for a summary. Not quite so good when you write a novel.

Will I be implementing all of these things? Yes, but even then I am not one of those rare people who never make the same mistake twice. I tend to swing like a pendulum between too much on one end and too little on the other while aiming for that sweet center spot.

If you review any of my stories, could you please point out any poor grammar or spelling? It would help. Also, if you point out a portion of the story that seems awkward or wrong or really good, and say why you think so, that would be a big help.

Depending on your review, I may respond to it via private messaging (response is upon my discretion). Asking a good question is a good way to get a response. Telling me if there was an element of the story which you liked or disliked or what effect it had (whether good or bad) will be even better.

Feel free to take any of my ideas or stories as inspiration for your own story or even as a spin-off. I figure that if I can read a story and want to make my own twist on it, then you should be able to read my fanfiction and make a twist on it too. And I would be interested in beta-reading any spin-offs of my work.
